When I fly FPV (First Person View) drones, my favorite “style” is to fly with what FPV pilots call “Flow”.
What is the Flow?
The brain can process roughly a maximum of 110 pieces of information per second. But what if we could play that information in our minds in slow motion? Studies performed by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, have helped us gain the first insights into this phenomena.
When reaching a flow state, why does time tend to move strangely? By achieving a state of flow studies are finding we can actually turn down the volume of our pre-frontal cortex. This is where the brain processes our executive functioning tasks. It is also the part of the brain that tracks time, and by being able to do this. We can enter a hyper focused feel good state of mind.
When flow is achieved, attention becomes so focused on the task at hand that everything else disappears. Sense of self-consciousness disappears and is filled with and overwhelming sense of euphoria. Our brain begins to release dopamine, norepinephrine, anandamide, serotonin, and endorphins. Each of these can contribute to achieving heightened states of performance of the body and the mind.
Flow amplifies all of our physical skills. When we achieve this state, the brain takes in more information and processes it on a deeper level. Pattern recognition, future prediction and all of these are being amplified.
Have you ever reached this state? There are more ways than drone flying to help one get into this mindset. What are some of the ways you get into the flow zone?

I just started Tai Chi so to me, when you speak of “flow” that is what I think of. It is a truly amazing feeling to get into the flow physically and mentally! Love your work!
